2023 Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer has been a top SUV since it first arrived on dealership lots in 1990. The current generation has a powerful engine lineup, a roomy cabin, and the latest technology. The Explorer carries over from the 2022 model year to 2023 without any significant changes, but there is a new Red Jewel Metallic exterior color option in the mix. Here's a look at what you can get with the 2023 Ford Explorer.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The Base Explorer comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, and LED headlights. Just a bump up to the XLT adds roof rails and heated side exterior mirrors, while the ST-Line adds 20-inch wheels, a black grille, and black exterior trim elements, along with power-folding side mirrors. The Timberline comes with 18-inch black alloy wheels, skid plates, front tow hooks, and an off-road suspension. Stepping up to the Limited gets you 20-inch alloy wheels and chrome exterior trim. Choose the ST trim for quad exhaust outlets or the King Ranch or Platinum for a hands-free liftgate.
Engine (Power)
The base engine for the Explorer is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder gas engine that puts out 300 horsepower. A 3.0-liter turbo V-6 is available for the higher-end trims and will get you 400 horsepower. There's also a hybrid powertrain with 318 horsepower made up of a 3.3-liter V-6 and an electric motor. All of these use a 10-speed automatic transmission, and most come standard with rear-wheel drive and offer all-wheel drive as an option. The Timberline comes standard with all-wheel drive.
Performance
Any of the engines will easily propel the Explorer around town and give it the power to merge and pass on the highway with ease. The hybrid is the most fuel-efficient of the bunch, but the base engine is just as efficient on the highway. When equipped with the tow package, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds.
Interior
There's room for up to seven people in the Explorer. The base trim comes with cloth upholstery and a power-adjustable driver's seat, while the XLT adds heated front seats. Moving up the lineup adds cabin features such as simulated leather or genuine leather, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. An 8-inch touchscreen comes in the Base, which also has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, and a six-speaker stereo. A 10.1-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system is available, and you can also get a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel.
Safety Features
Every 2023 Ford Explorer comes with Ford's CoPilot360 suite of driver aids. It includes automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning with automatic braking, a blind-spot warnings system with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure mitigation. It also includes rear parking sensors and trailer sway control. The XLT Technology Package adds a 360-degree surround-view parking system, and you can also upgrade by adding the Ford Co-Pilot Assist+ package with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and evasive steering assist. These optional driver aids come standard with the ST-Line trim and above.
