ziplineEven though you could never exhaust all the fun explorations Dahlonega has to offer, there may be days when you feel the need to get out of town for the day. Here’s where we’d go and what we’d do when the wanderlust kicks in.

1. Tiger, GA

Only an hour and thirteen-minute drive northeast, you’ll find the quaint town of Tiger, GA. Whether named for a Cherokee Chief or the panthers that roam the area makes no difference. We suggest you make your first stop at Goats on the Roof General Store. Here you’ll find nitrogen-made ice cream, homemade fudge, and one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Don’t forget to feed the goats! They really are on the roof.

For the 21 and older crowd, do a little wine-tasting at either Stonewall Creek Vineyards or Tiger Mountain Vineyards. (As always, drink responsibly, and don’t drink and drive.) Spend the rest of the afternoon taking in the scenic views as you hike to Stonewall Creek Falls. Grab dinner-to-go from The Red Barn Cafe or Bridge Creek Fresh Market and Deli to enjoy as you end the evening relaxing under the stars while watching a movie on the big screen at the nostalgic Tiger Drive-In.

2. Dawsonville, GA

Ready for outdoor adventure? The town of Dawsonville is less than a half-hour drive southwest and is home to the Amicalola Falls State Park which boasts the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River. The park also offers guided hikes, fitness trails, archery, ziplines, and more. For more outdoor fun, try the Chestatee Golf Club.

The club offers 18 holes settled into the scenic backdrop of the North Georgia Mountains along the shore of Lake Sidney Lanier. If exploring nature isn’t your forte, maybe Velocity Motorsports is more your speed. Professional instructors assist as you choose your favorite sports car and take a turn around the track. Lamborghini, Porsche, and Ferrari are just a few of your choices! Treat yourself to dinner before heading home. We suggest Big D’s BBQ for a truly southern dining experience.

3. Duluth, GA

Less than an hour south, you’ll find the small town of Duluth. Start the day with a visit to the Southeastern Railway Museum which will thrill young and old railroad-enthusiasts alike. Take a look inside a restored Pullman car or ride in a restored caboose pulled by an antique locomotive engine.

The museum is home to more than 90 items connecting the past to the present by educating visitors about the lasting impact of these transportation inventions on the American southeast. In the evening, check out the well-preserved historic district downtown. Choose any of the many restaurants offering local southern fare or shop one of the locally-owned retail shops.

Adventure awaits! Outdoor adventure, unique shopping and dining experiences, educational explorations, and more beckon you to hit the road and get out of town. Before you head out, be sure to stop by and see us at Chestatee Ford.
