History of Fall Creek Falls State Park
The landscape around Cane Creek is famous for its network of waterfalls and gorges and its historically impassable terrain. The Fall Creek Falls State Park was pioneered in 1937 to restore the forest land that had been eroded by the river. Hiking trails, look-out points, and camping facilities have been gradually added to the Park over time making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. Cane Creek Gorge lies in the heart of this beautiful wilderness.
What Is Cane Creek Famous For?
Although Fall Creek Falls is the highest waterfall in the Park, Cane Creek is the largest fall by water volume. This powerful torrent eroded the landscape to create the deep Cane Creek Gorge. It is the first major fall in this network and is responsible for causing the other cascades. Cane Creek is famous for its views, which can be seen from various points on the nearby trails and the surrounding area is a great location for wild swimming.
Culture at Fall Creek Falls State Park
Beyond exploring the Fall Creek Falls Park itself, the surrounding area has a wealth of cultural attractions to discover. Visitors entering the park can stop at the Betty Dunn Nature Center that hosts exhibits about the geology and history of the area. Feel like exploring further afield? A short drive takes you to Dahlonega where you can visit the Yahoola Cherokee Museum or take a bus tour around the area’s forest and mountain region.
If dramatic scenery and wild locations are your style, drive out to see the Virgin Falls Natural Area. Emerging from a cave above a 110 ft drop, these falls plunge spectacularly before vanishing into another cave below. Be warned, however, this is a tough area to hike and not for the faint-hearted.

Fall Creek Falls State Park is a wonderful tourist destination if you love immersing yourself in nature. Visitors can explore iconic spots, like Cane Creek, via the hiking trails or drive the scenic loop road that navigates the park. Camping is available near Cane Creek and at several other locations throughout the Park. During your stay, you can also play a few rounds on the Fall Creek Golf Course or take on the treetop Canopy Challenge Course.
